Jeevamrutham
Jeevamrutham is an organic fertilizer and soil conditioner used in organic farming. It is made from easily available natural ingredients and helps improve soil fertility and plant health. Below are the steps to make Jeevamrutham:
### Ingredients:
1. Cow dung - 5 kg
2. Cow urine - 10 liters
3. Jaggery (or molasses) - 2 kg
4. Gram flour (chickpea flour) - 2 kg
5. Soil - 10 kg
### Equipment:
1. Large container or pit (preferably made of plastic or concrete)
2. Stirring stick or shovel
3. Gunny bags or a plastic sheet to cover the mixture
### Steps:
1. **Prepare the Container or Pit:**
Choose a large container or dig a pit in the ground. The container or pit should be big enough to hold all the ingredients and allow for stirring.
2. **Mix Cow Dung and Soil:**
Start by mixing the cow dung and soil together in the container or pit. This forms the base of the Jeevamrutham.
3. **Add Cow Urine:**
Pour the cow urine into the mixture. Cow urine contains beneficial microorganisms that help in the decomposition process and add nutrients to the soil.
4. **Mix Jaggery:**
Add the jaggery (or molasses) to the mixture. Jaggery provides energy to the microorganisms, helping them multiply and break down the organic matter effectively.
5. **Incorporate Gram Flour:**
Sprinkle the gram flour (chickpea flour) over the mixture. Gram flour acts as a source of protein for the microorganisms, promoting their growth and activity.
6. **Stir Thoroughly:**
Use a stirring stick or shovel to thoroughly mix all the ingredients together. Make sure everything is well combined to ensure even decomposition and fermentation.
7. **Cover and Ferment:**
Cover the container or pit with gunny bags or a plastic sheet to protect the mixture from rain and sunlight. Let the mixture ferment for about 7 to 10 days. During this time, the microorganisms will multiply, and the mixture will undergo fermentation.
8. **Stir Daily:**
Stir the mixture once or twice daily during the fermentation period. This helps aerate the mixture and distribute the microorganisms evenly.
9. **Ready for Use:**
After 7 to 10 days, the Jeevamrutham should be ready for use. It will have a pleasant earthy smell and a crumbly texture. You can now use it as a soil conditioner and organic fertilizer for your plants.
### Application:
- Dilute the Jeevamrutham with water in a ratio of 1:10 (one part Jeevamrutham to ten parts water) before applying it to your plants.
- Use the diluted mixture to water your plants or as a foliar spray. Apply it around the root zone of plants, avoiding direct contact with the foliage.
By following these steps, you can make Jeevamrutham at home and promote healthy growth in your plants using organic and natural methods.
